Question:
In the past, when hair transplant plugs were used, how big were the grafts and about how many hairs did they contain compared to today’s FUE and FUG transplant?

Answer:
In the past, larger grafts were used and are commonly referred to as plugs. These generally had between 6 to 15 hair follicles per graft.

In the older surgeries, they were even larger but as time passed, the grafts started getting smaller with 15 to 12 hairs per unit, then 10 to 8 per graft and now today we are doing some follicular unit grafting where we only use naturally occurring 1, 2 and 3 hair grafts and occasionally at the most maybe a 4-hair follicular unit.
