Question:
I am an African American woman and I would love to have my natural hair but it is starting to fall out. I am wondering if the procedure for African American hair transplant is different than that for Caucasian women and if I would need to go to a doctor who specialized in African American hair transplants?

Answer:
Yes, African American females are potentially good candidates for hair transplantation if the hair loss is in fact genetic and the patient’s expectations are realistic.

There is a difference in the way the procedure is performed between Caucasian and African Americans; however, it does not really change whether or not the patient is male or female.

There are several doctors who have quite a bit of experience in doing hair transplantation on African Americans. I do recommend that if an African American patient is considering having hair transplantation they choose a doctor who has a reasonable amount of experience doing hair transplants on African Americans.
