Question:
I have pretty extensive hair loss and was wondering are scalp flaps ever used any more?

Answer:
Scalp flaps and/or scalp reductions are very rarely used in today’s area of hair transplantation and/or hair restoration. There are only one to two clinics that I know of here in the United States that do still perform scalp reductions under certain circumstances and even those clinics only perform that type of procedure in only rare cases. I am unaware of any clinic anywhere internationally that still performs flap surgery.

There are still a few circumstances where a patient has relatively extensive hair loss and minimal donor area hair where a scalp reduction might be an option for that patient. However, all scalp reductions are still meant to be performed with additional hair transplantation being performed after the scalp reduction.
