Alopecia in men, or male pattern baldness, is now treated using the ARTAS FUE technology. The ARTAS system is the system of robotic surgical hair transplantation. Approved by the FDA, the ARTAS system uses Follicular Unit Excision (FUE) technology to transplant and restore hair in balding men. It is a minimally invasive process.

The Procedure

In the ARTAS FUE hair transplant process, hair follicles from the healthy areas of the head are removed, or “harvested,” and then transplanted in the balding areas. In other words, healthy hair follicles from the back or sides of the scalp are removed and planted in the area where the hair has fallen out. It is done in such a way that the existing healthy hair is not damaged.

The ARTAS robot uses sophisticated imaging technology and algorithms to identify healthy follicular units to harvest them. The robot then extracts the follicular units and implants them in the balding areas of the head. The process gives you a naturally appearing hairline.

But before everything else, the area where the hair will be transplanted is given local anesthesia. This helps to make the procedure almost completely pain-free. There may be some minor discomfort, but this is quite common and only temporary.

The procedure takes a good couple of hours, but it really depends on how much hair you want to transplant. We may want to perform the transplant in several sessions; it will depend on each patient’s unique case.

On the day before the transplant, it is best that you trim your hair in the donor area. The donor area is the area from which healthy hair will be taken. Your doctor will advise you on how much trimming is needed. Trimming will allow the ARTAS robot to accurately identify and harvest the healthy hair.

Results

The results of the ARTAS FUE hair transplant procedure are permanent, because your own permanently growing hair is used. The transplanted hair will grow naturally but in phases. New hair can be seen three months after the procedure is done, and it will keep on growing for a year.

You will notice an improvement in your hairline within six months of the procedure; in this time, you will get a fuller, thicker head of hair. The newer hair will not fall off.

Recovery

The recovery time for the ARTAS FUE hair transplant is a lot quicker than the other surgical hair transplant procedures. Because there are no stitches or incisions involved, the healing time is shorter. There may be some post-procedure swelling, but this goes away in a couple of days.

You can go back to work after a day or two without any issues. Generally, a follow-up visit is advised for the following day. During this follow-up, the doctor takes a look at your scalp and gives you directions on taking care of your implanted hair.
